Safety

Concussions and Head Injuries

Injuries, and in particular, head injuries are at the top of mind of every coach and parent.  A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury, or TBI, caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head that can change the way your brain normally works. Concussions can also occur from a fall or a blow to the body that causes the head and brain to move quickly back and forth.

Health care professionals may describe a concussion as a mild brain injury because concussions are usually not life-threatening. Even so, their effects can be serious.  NRYF will treat all head injuries seriously and with caution.  Players who exhibit concussion symptoms will be held out of practice and may not return to practice or play until cleared by a physician.

NRYF coaches are all trained on concussion awareness and Heads-Up Football tackling to help ensure the safety of our players.

Hydration

Parents, we need your help too.  While coaches can certainly foster safety in practices and games, it is up to you to ensure your child is well hydrated, fed, and rested prior to football activities.  As football practices begin during the summer, we need to proactively address the potential for heat related illnesses and injury to include cramping, dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.  Not only should your child have water for practice, he/she should be well hydrated prior to activity.

The American College of Sports Medicine recommends drinking four to eight ounces of water for every fifteen minutes of exercise.  In a two hour practice, this equates to 32 to 64 ounces of water, just for in practice hydration to replace fluids.
